West Bend Housewares Announces Recall of 14,000 Coffeemaker Carafes
On August 19th, West Bend Housewares LLC, of West Bend, Wisconsin announced a recall of about 14,000 ten cup coffee makers and replacement carafes based on reports that the carafe handle can break resulting in a burn or laceration risk for the consumer. Obviously, the burning can come about from the spilled hot liquid, the lacerations the result of the carafe's breaking.
West Bend states that it has received nearly 200 reports of the handles breaking or the carafe failing, including three reports of burns to the hands and arms of consumers.
The carafe is a 10-cup capacity glass pot with a black, plastic handle. It is used with the West Bend Housewares 10-cup Automatic Coffeemaker (item # 56870). The 10-cup replacement carafe was also sold separately (item # 5815). There is a four-digit date code printed on the bottom of the coffeemaker. Date codes beginning with 04 are included in this recall.
Manufactured in China, these products were sold at AAFES, Dillards, Bi-Mart and retail stores selling house wares from July 2004 through July 2005 costing on average about $32. The replacement carafe was sold separately via the same outlets for about $8.
Consumers are urged to stop using the carafes immediately and to contact West Bend for a free replacement.
