Zithromax Liver Damage
Zithromax, an antibiotic used for mild to moderate infections, has been linked to an increased risk of serious side effects. These Zithromax side effects reportedly include liver failure. Due to concerns about the risk of Zithromax liver failure, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated the Zithromax warning label, to reflect the risk of liver damage.
Zithromax, known generically as azithromycin, is used to treat mild to moderate infections including upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia. According to the Zithromax label (found online at fda.gov; 10/10) azithromycin is mainly eliminated from the patient's system through the liver, meaning that patients with liver problems could be at an increased risk of side effects.
In January, 2011, the FDA updated the warning label for Zithromax to include the risk of liver failure.
Symptoms of liver damage include jaundice, nausea, yellow eyes, abdominal pain, dark urine and clay-colored stool. Patients who are using Zithromax and show symptoms of liver damage should speak to a medical professional.
