Zontivity Side Effects Legal News and Lawsuits

Zontivity is a newer generation anticoagulant medication. Some anticoagulant medications have been linked to an increased risk of serious side effects, including uncontrolled bleeding and hemorrhaging in the brain. Lawsuits have been filed against the makers of some anticoagulant medications alleging patients were harmed by the use of such medications.

Anticoagulant medications are used to prevent heart attack and stroke by preventing the patient's blood from clotting. One potential side effect, however, is that an injury to a patient, even a seemingly minor one, could potentially result in uncontrolled bleeding, with serious consequences for the patients.

One anticoagulant medication, Warfarin, has been linked to an increased risk of bleeding but has an antidote, so if patients receive medical attention quickly enough, the bleeding can be stopped. Newer generation anticoagulant medications, including Xarelto and Pradaxa are linked to an increased risk of uncontrolled bleeding but currently have no known antidote.

In 2014, Zontivity (known generically as vorapaxar) was approved by the FDA as an anticoagulant to prevent stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular death in certain patients. It is the first in a class of drugs called protease-activated receptor-1 antagonists.

At least one study, known as TRACER, was stopped early because of a suggested increased risk of major bleeding, including intracranial hemorrhage, in patients who received Zontivity, according to FDA briefing documents. Furthermore, patients in another study called TRA2P who had a history of stroke stopped being enrolled because of a potential increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage.

The TRA2P study suggested an increased risk of moderate or severe bleeding and further suggested an increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage. A news release from the FDA notes that Zontivity increases the risk of bleeding, including life-threatening and fatal bleeding, with bleeding being the most commonly reported adverse reaction linked to Zontivity.
