According to the news source, the study, which was published in the
New England Journal of Medicine, examined 602 people over the age of 18 who had been diagnosed with prediabetes. The average rate of participants on the medication developing type 2 diabetes was just 2.1 percent, while 7.6 percent of those in the placebo group developed the condition.
However, those taking Actos experienced more adverse side effects, gained an average of nine pounds and experienced more fluid retention than those taking the placebo, according to the study.
Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president-elect of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association who was not involved in the study, said that while the results of the study indicated some positives, "one has to consider the lack of knowledge of long-term safety in a population that's already at risk of disease."
