Jefferson County, TXAttorneys recently received a continuance in the retrial of an asbestos lawsuit filed in Texas against DuPont De Nemours, the Southeast Texas Record reports.
Despite the fact that DuPont reportedly won a jury verdict in the case in 2008, Judge Donald Floyd later threw out the jury's decision and granted the asbestos attorney's motion for a retrial, the news provider said.
The motion for continuance was reportedly filed on September 27, with the asbestos attorney contending that "this continuance is not sought for purposes of delay but so that justice can and will be done."
The case involves a lawsuit filed by Caryl Richarson on behalf of her deceased father and former refinery worker Willis Whisnant Jr. According to the news provider, Whisnant, who was a former subcontractor for DuPont, died of mesothelioma in his late 70s.
In addition to mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause asbestosis and lung cancer. The World Health Organization estimates that such illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year.
