The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in New Orleans, contends that users of the diabetes medication have suffered strokes, heart attacks and heart failure as a result. The drug company is accused of knowing about the potential serious side effects and not properly warning patients of the health risks, according to the lawsuit.
The suit includes a significant number of plaintiffs, including family members of those who allegedly suffered from the Avandia side effects, according to the news source.
In September, the US Food and Drug Administration restricted use of the medication to patients with Type 2 diabetes who are unable to control the condition with other drugs, according to the news provider.
According to its Web site, GlaxoSmithKline is a UK-based drug company that has offices in more than 100 countries around the world.
