Washington Man Receives $10 Million Settlement in Brain Injury Case

Tacoma, WAA settlement has been reached between King County, Washington, and the family of Christopher Sean Harris, who suffered a brain injury in May 2009, when he was allegedly shoved by a sheriff's deputy into a wall, the Seattle Times reports.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">Sarah Harris, Christopher's wife, filed a personal injury lawsuit against the county and alleged that Deputy Matthew Paul used excessive force in the incident, the news source said.

The settlement reportedly is the largest compensation ever paid by the county, and it took place while a civil trial was underway in the case.

Sarah Harris said that the money will allow her to provide 24-hour care for her husband and enable the couple to move out of Christopher's father's house.

"It gives you a little bit of hope into your future, of moving on past this moment," Sarah Harris said during a recent news conference. She added, however, that the financial compensation "doesn't fix any of it."

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, traumatic brain injury occurs "when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain."
