New York, NYAt least thirteen people died in a bus crash when the bus they were traveling in rolled onto its side and was sliced in half by a support pole for a large sign. In addition to the thirteen killed in the bus accident, another eight were in critical condition. The bus crashed on March 12 on a busy highway in the Bronx.
According to The Associated Press (03/12/11), the driver told police he lost control after a tractor trailer clipped the bus from behind. The bus, which had 31 passengers plus the driver, was operated by World Wide Tours and was heading to Manhattan's Chinatown from the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. Reports indicate that the bus flipped over then hit the support pole for the sign head on. The pole then sliced the bus from front to back, peeling off the roof.
Police are now reportedly looking for the tractor trailer that hit the bus. Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City, issued a statement expressing his sympathies and thoughts for the victims of the tragedy.
