Pfizer Hides Chantix Side Effects in Ads

. By Charles Benson

As we enter the new year, many people have made resolutions to finally quit smoking. However, a smoking cessation educator in South Carolina is warning prospective quitters that television and print advertisements may not be telling the whole truth about the risks of Chantix side effects.

In particular, the educator takes issue with the mention of placebo testing in support of the product. The ads claim that groups given a placebo experienced increased frustrations, while those given the medication received some form of relief - a process that educators label as junk science. Chantix studies were not blind tests.

Recently, a petition drive initiated by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius has been making its rounds around Washington, calling for US health officials to demand more honest quitting studies from the manufacturers of cessation medications.

The group goes on to highlight going cold turkey as a superior method of quitting, citing a 2006 National Cancer Institute survey that showed the method's superiority to nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) in long-term quitters.
