Several Virginia Homes For Sale have Chinese Drywall

A 2,700 square-foot, five bedroom home in Williamsburg, Virginia, is listed at just $206,000, just four years after it sold for $383,000 because it contains tainted Chinese drywall.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that this seemingly too-good-to-be-true property is just one of a number of houses that are on the market that contain Chinese drywall.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that this particular drywall emits more sulfuric gases than most drywall made in America. These gases can cause metal corrosion in the houses. The commission recommends that owners of such properties remove and replace the Chinese drywall, electrical wiring and natural gas pipeline.

One of the issues with the homes built with Chinese drywall is that sometimes the problem is not disclosed to home buyers. Some real estate agents in the area said that the Chinese drywall issue isn't listed in the advertisement for the property, but that potential buyers are informed of the problem when they visit the house.

Rebecca Bulkeley, the real estate agent for two Virginia properties with tainted Chinese drywall, told the news source that it is important to inform consumers of the problem.

"In this particular case, you cannot go far enough," she said. "We are obligated to protect the public."
