Medical Companies Roll out New Cold Therapy Machines Despite Health Risks

. By Charles Benson

A number of healthcare providers and major manufacturers are releasing new cold therapy machines despite the serious risk of bodily harm the devices present.

Medical device manufacturer DJO Incorporated, sporting equipment company Right Down Broadway, and pharmaceutical supplier Lil' Drug Store Products are all launching new cold or cryotherapy products later in the year for a variety of uses ranging from relief of pain and swelling to treatment of muscle tears and recuperation.

Yet many within the industry are concerned that these products may pose a threat to users. A case study appearing in the American Journal of Pain Management titled "Cryotherapy Can Cause Permanent Nerve Damage" outlined the potential risks of these items, including nerve damage, reflex sympathetic dystrophy and loss of limbs.

The FDA responded by issuing a Patient Safety Advisory and Class A Recall over BREg Polar Care products, as well as those produced by DonJoy and EBIce.

It should be noted that no DJO, Right Down Broadway or Lil' Drug Store Products cold therapy machine has been linked to these issues as of yet.
