New York, NYDespite the fact that Johnson & Johnson has been hit with a number of lawsuits over its DePuy hip replacement and subsequent recalls, the company is reportedly dominating its competition in the orthopedic-device market.
Bloomberg reports that Johnson & Johnson has been so successful lately that it could force rivals such as Zimmer Holdings Inc.—which has dealt with recalls and lawsuits of its own—and Stryker Corp. to make purchases to compete.
According to the news source, Johnson & Johnson's success is tied to its $21.3 billion acquisition of Synthes Inc., which could ultimately become part of its DePuy Orthopaedics unit.
"What clearly happens is J&J becomes No. 1 in all of ortho," David Turkaly, a Susquehanna Financial Group analyst, told the news source. "The Strykers and Zimmers of the world are probably now a good distance behind the animal that J&J is in those markets."
DePuy was forced to issue a massive recall after a number of patients complained that they needed to receive a follow-up revision surgery soon after the replacement was implanted.
