London, EnglandRoughly 40,000 people who have received a DePuy hip replacement are set to have their implants reviewed by British health authorities over fears that the metal augmentations may be linked to non-cancerous tumors, severe swelling and sinew damage.
The concerns arose from a string of growths that appeared in individuals who had undergone the procedure. Many believe that the tumors are an unanticipated side effect of debris produced by the friction between the two metal plates placed at the hip joint.
These allegations will only add fuel to the fire of the legal claims being pursued in the US against DePuy, one of the manufacturers of the offending implants.
For its part, DePuy continues to insist that its products are safe for the average consumer, though the company has recently issued a safety notice warning women of "childbearing age" against getting these implants due to a "higher than expected" rate of removals, according to the Telegraph.
The company has announced plans to phase out the potentially dangerous products, but continues to claim that data about the safety was not the basis for its decision.
