More Ozempic Side Effects—from Sagging Breasts to Compulsive Behavior

. By

Lawsuits filed against Ozempic and other weight loss drug makers claim side effects ranging from sagging breasts to compulsive gambling cause serious harm.

Santa Clara, CAMore side effects—including bizarre behavior—caused by Ozempic and other weight loss drugs have been added to the growing list of downsides, and attorneys predict thousands more Ozempic lawsuits will be filed.

Digestive Side Effects

USA Today in March featured a number of people claiming serious Ozempic side effects. Dozens of patients are suing Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, the two companies that make GLP-1 drugs to treat diabetes and weight loss, claiming they suffered distressing digestive symptoms, such as gallbladder removal or gastroparesis, after taking the medication.

“I couldn’t keep anything down,” Monica Church told USA Today. “I couldn’t eat anything. I couldn’t drink anything. I had such burning in my stomach and in my chest that nothing helped.” She is considering litigation after complaining of life-altering experiences with Ozempic. Her symptoms were so severe that she was hospitalized for two weeks because of pain, vomiting and gastroparesis, or stomach paralysis. Church discontinued the drug but her symptoms stayed. Diabetes patient Bob Tuttle took Ozempic to keep his blood sugar levels low. Two years after being on Ozempic he was extremely ill with side effects such as morning nausea and diarrhea: he was diagnosed with gastroparesis and discontinued the drug. That was a year ago and he still feels sick every morning.

Impulse Control Disorder Side Effects

Another downside to the weight loss drugs is bizarre behavior. The UK’s Daily Mail reported that some Ozempic and Wegovy users are acting “out of character” and engaging in risky sex, compulsive gambling or even making rash major life decisions such as filing for divorce. Experts believe that “game changing” Ozempic and similar GLP-1 agonists change levels of the brain chemical dopamine, resulting in bizarre reactions, known collectively as impulse-control disorder. (Drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease, restless legs syndrome and other conditions potentially treated with dopamine agonists theoretically increased risk of developing gambling disorder. For instance, Mirapex is one such medication.)

Sagging Breasts

Increasingly, Ozempic users on social media have also complained of being left with gaunt facial features, sagging 'melted candle' skin, 'empty' breasts and hair loss. While not believed to be a direct side effect of the drug, they are typically associated with dramatic weight loss. Healthline reports that “Ozempic breasts”—unexpected changes in breast size or shape as a result of rapid, extreme weight loss—is the latest side effect of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. Symptoms include sagging and tenderness.

More Lawsuits Expected

More than five dozen lawsuits accuse Novo Nordisk (Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus) or Eli Lilly (Trulicity and Mounjaro) of failing to notify patients about the side effects of their popular diabetes or weight loss drugs. These personal injury cases have been centralized under a federal judge in Philadelphia because they share common elements involving the same class of drugs.

Among the more than five dozen lawsuits thus far, Novo Nordisk, maker of Ozempic and Wegovy, faces the most suits. Another dozen new cases were added to the Ozempic class action MDL last month and as of early June, 101 pending cases are in the Ozempic MDL However, attorneys expect over 10,000 personal injury lawsuits.
