DirecTV: Consumers Angry About Cancellation Fees

. By
Seattle, WACell phone customers are not the only ones complaining that they are being charged too much for cancellation fees: customers of DirecTV are also upset that they are being unfairly charged for terminating their service. Much like the cell phone companies, DirecTV is apparently using changes to customer contracts as a reason to extend those contracts, often without customer knowledge or authorization. Now, some customers are investigating a lawsuit against DirecTV, alleging they were improperly charged cancellation fees.

Fee AngerConsumers have written in to various websites with their complaints about DirecTV's cancellation policy and their customer service. Some customers write that they have been DirecTV customers for over four years and were still charged a $287 cancellation fee when they terminated their service. Many complain that they were never informed about the cancellation fee when they entered into their contract with DirecTV and certainly never expected to be charged a termination fee after four or more years with the company.

Furthermore, they complain that they have not received the services they subscribed to and have had repeated problems with the DirecTV's reception. Some say that they have had technicians at their residence numerous times to fix problems with their DirecTV equipment.

According to Consumerist.com people who ordered a new DirecTV box were automatically enrolled in a new one year service plan, even if they were not aware of the enrollment and did not approve it. This has even happened to consumers who have been DirecTV customers for over five years.

One consumer says he never even had DirecTV delivered to his residence—he canceled service immediately after ordering it when the estimated delivery date jumped from between one and two days to between four and six days. Despite canceling the order immediately, DirecTV allegedly tried to charge the man $400 for terminating the service.

Of course, DirecTV is not the first company to use changes to service contracts as a reason to extend the length of the customer's contract. Cell phone companies used to do so as well, and now face multiple lawsuits alleging that customer contracts were extended without customer authorization. Although DirecTV does not yet face the mountain of lawsuits that cell phone companies face, it is likely that lawsuits will be filed in the near future.

This is because customers are now investigating possible lawsuits against the company, alleging that its early termination fees are unfair. They further allege that their contracts were improperly extended without their knowledge and that they were charged early termination fees even when they paid full price for their DirecTV equipment.

If you feel you have been unfairly charged a cancellation fee by DirecTV, contact a lawyer who can determine your eligibility to join a lawsuit against the company.

Customer service with Direct TV is a sham. I had bad service and customer service told me I could close my account without any fees. That turns out to be a lie. After two months a bill collector sent a bill to collect for a disconnect fee even after I was told by several customer service reps that all was ok. I filed complaints with the BBB and got the attention of higher ups and they gave me even more of a run around. The latest lie is that I never had any contact with them explaining the problems i was having. I was told to suck it up even though service was bad. They said I never had a problem and nothing was wrong with the equipment or the installation. How do they know? Noone ever showed up to make repairs or see that the installation was bad. They continue to string me along and expect me to pay up.

I called to cancel Direct Tv service in 2013 CC offered me an upgrade package for less *$54.00) than I was currently paying($85.00) for 1 year commitment I agreed. A few months later we moved they offered to move system for free. Are first bill after we moved went up to $90. I called they looked at notes and gave credit. This went on for 7 or 8 months then they said no more, I got our service end date of Aug. 2016 I argued this date but no luck because when I moved they committed us to a 2 year contract without my knowledge. So had to pay the $90. My receiver failed I called them after several attempt's to fix w/ CC they said they would send a receiver to me because mine had failed and there would be no charge. Now we no longer want there service just cant afford it ($110.00) and we have completed there extra year on contract. Now they say we are in contract until Aug 2017 because that is what there notes say! As far as I am concerned they are operate under trickery, deception and try to where you down! If they have there way they will lie there way until you die then go after your kids. I was a DTV customer through 2013 (5yrs) now 8yers through deception!

i entered a 2 year directv contract in sept. 2011. we moved approx 11 months later & directv charged us $149 for their "free mover" program. then, after needing another receiver at our new residence, directv started a new 2 year contact without my consent. i have been told that i will need to pay over $400 in order to terminate my contract. this company is sleezy & their corporate administration most likely encourages their employees to not disclose company policy. what recourse do i have?

This is an interesting, deserved decision. The problem now lies in the hands of state governments which will receive this money through their "fraud funds" to be then-disbursed to customers based on their complaint. I [work for a competitor]and have been watching this for a while. It has also been said that DirecTV will be raising rates on their customers an average of $2-3 per month to compensate the loss. Unfortunate for the DirecTV customers. What should also be included here is that DirecTV recently received an "F" from the BBB due to many factors including number of customer complaints.
