Detroit, MIAt least six firefighters have been injured in a fire that caused the collapse of a two-story building on the east side of Detroit early Friday morning.
According to a report on MSNBC.com four firefighters are in critical condition and another two in serious condition. They were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and St. John Hospital.
"It does break our hearts, but our hearts are already broken," an unnamed firefighter told ClickOnDetroit.com outside one of those hospitals. "We're just going to try to be tough and support our families. We have some serious injuries going on here. It's a life-changing day for us."
The scene was engulfed in clouds of dark smoke, making the firefighters' job that much more difficult, but by midmorning the smoke had lightened as crews continued to pour water over the burning building. Located about five miles from downtown Detroit, just west of the suburb known as Grosse Pointe Park, the building had housed a liquor store, a beauty salon and a phone business.
