Whole Foods recalls Trout

Whole Foods Market® is recalling Whole Catch Lemon Pepper Garlic Hot Smoked Trout. The [FDA] is warning consumers that it might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail and/or elderly people.

Short term symptoms in healthy people include:
• high fever
• severe headache
• stiffness
• nausea
• abdominal pain
• diarrhea

It can be particulary harmful to pregnant women, causing miscarriages and stillbirths.

This product, distributed by Whole Foods Market, is known to have been stocked in stores in the following states: California, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The FDA states that "The recall was initiated after random testing by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Food Safety. Other batches and other varieties of this product are not affected by this voluntary recall. The company is still investigating what may have caused the problem."
