Beverly started taking Lisinopril in 2001 when she was diagnosed with hypertension. "I took it for a few years and felt OK, but a few years later my blood pressure was out of control," says Beverly, "so my physician's assistant prescribed Lisinopril 40mg, up from the 10mg I was taking." At that time Beverly mentioned her swollen gums, thinking it might be a Lisinopril side effect, but the assistant wasn't concerned. "My blood pressure didn't drop, but the doctor dropped the Lisinopril back to 10mg??"I don't know why.
"About a year later I had difficulty breathing but chalked it up to a summer cold," Beverly adds. "One Friday night my blood pressure soared so much that my friend took me to ER. I was released Sunday afternoon??"the doctor didn't notice the swelling of my lips, gums, and tongue; he ordered me to continue the Lisinopril, but all my symptoms were getting progressively worse. The following Friday night I was just getting out of the shower when I called 911??"I could hardly breathe, I was gasping for air. I met the paramedics in the street and just about fell into the ambulance.
"An allergy specialist saw me and took me off the Lisinopril immediately; he told me that this med was causing the swelling and my breathing problems, so thanks to Lisinopril I was hospitalized for a week and racked up about $23,000 in medical bills." (Beverly doesn't have health insurance so this has also caused her severe financial problems.)
READ MORE LISINOPRIL LEGAL NEWS
"I was put on a different hypertension med and felt well enough to go home," says Beverly. "I tried talking to the clinic administrator where I was first prescribed Lisinopril but nobody would talk to me. I changed doctors but she advised that I go back on Lisinopril, despite me telling her its side effects. Needless to say, I talked her into prescribing another drug. I still have trouble breathing and often have inflammation in my ankles, feet and legs??"I'm certain all these symptoms are caused by Lisinopril. I don't know whether they are long-term side effects or not, and naturally I wonder if they will get any worse."
Beverly is hopeful that she has a case against the drug manufacturer and that an attorney will review her claim.

My doctor switched me to Losartan a year ago. I'm still not 100% back to 'normal', but I'm no longer losing control randomly. I still cannot go for long walks in my neighborhood. If I want to do any walking or running, I have to go to the gym where there are bathrooms!

In December of that year I developed pulmonary embolisms from injuries sustained in accident. I was placed on 10mg Lisinopril because blood pressure was high. I explained to doctor that my pressure was always within normal ranges and was still convinced to take it for a period of time and would re evaluate next follow up visit. I then began experiencing severe cough, choking, dizziness, passing out, confusion, severe abdominal cramps, and other ailments associated with this drug. Removed from medication in late august and to this day still continue with many of the symptoms from drug. At all cost please research and refrain from taking this dangerous medication.

Take "hypertension". Is it really a "disease" or is it a "symptom"? How many patients ever ask their doctor what is CAUSING the high blood pressure? Doc might tell you that you have "essential hypertension". The first explanation will claim it's because you're a smoker, if you are. Or he might tell you it's because you drink alcoholic beverages, if you do. If you're overweight, it's because you're fat. There are all sorts of medical fingers of blame that they ignore even attempting to isolate the cause. Instead, they throw some pills at you that will modify normal body physiological or biological functions that will "cure" the high blood pressure SYMPTOM...but will make you feel worse or CAUSE new problems. The doc smiles at you and expects you to tell him (her) how wonderful he (she) is. The doc doesn't really want to hear he didn't prescribe right.
Is it really the drug that is "bad", or is it the physician?
I'm not a doctor but I sure do study a lot of medical literature. Medical literature explains how wonderful the body is at maintaining homeostasis---i.e. how it finely regulates all body functions to maintain health. BODY BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL is one. It is designed to increase blood pressure when it needs to overcome other misbalances or problems...that are left undetected but ultimately kill you if not treated.
So, what can happen? Cardiac...liver...kidney...brain...cancers---- continue to worsen because doctors accept routine blood test results that are declared "normal" even when there are individual results outside that wide range called "normal". Blood pressure is high...The body's way to overcome the detrimental effects of what causes it. Doc says he'll fix it..." take this blood pressure med".
The med...IF EFFECTIVE...overrides what is best for the body to maintain its life....while the real culprit remains untreated.
Certainly, there are diseases that medical attention can't fix...Or are too far advanced that the med may simply help extend your life.
But don't blame the drug itself. Blame doctors that don't listen to patient symptoms and complaints.
Hypertension is a symptom. Doctors treat it as a disease.

The nurses and doctors at the hospital say they see about 10 angioedema cases per yer due to ACE inhibitor medication. One nurse participated in a research study where there were many findings that this particular causes adverse reactions and said it's a known problem medication. You can be taking it for 3 months or 3 years and this random event can occur.
Please, please, please stop taking this if you are.

My conclusion is that either I developed some delayed problems which just happened to coincide with the switch to Lupin, or the Lupin lisinopril actually caused these side effects.

I notice with these symptoms my Blood pressure is not getting better. Im going to weave offor this medication and see if I get better. I spent half of my life telling everybody how safe this product was.....until I started having an angioedema in my lips, my tongue, my feet, etc. For almost three months I ignored what was causing it.
I tried an immunologist that a good friend who is a doctor recommended me. As strange as it might sound, this immunologist disregarded my comments onthe fact that I was taking lisinopril 5 mg. for almost 30 years.
I went on treatment but as soon as I stopped taking loratadine the symptoms came back.
Something told me that there could be something wrong with lisinopril. When checking the side effects of this drug and all the stories I went in SHOCK. I was completely sure that lisinopril was the origin of all my problems.
So I stopped taking it immediately. Reading the stories I see that somebody had lost a lot of weight before he started with the swollen lips and tongue. I myself had lost some 17 pounds in the last 6 months. I don't know if weight loss may have to do with it. This is the only clue I have so far. I is very strange that my problems begun almost 30 years after I started taking this drug to control my high blood pressure.
The other question I have is regarding the time required to clean my system. I see that some of you have continued with the swollen lips, tongue, etc., after having stopped taking this drug.
Are there any prescribed medicines or natural medicines that I could take to fully clean my body. I am a little worried because it seems like the side effects don't go away immediately. So please comment on this. So please help me with my questions and doubts.

Welllll... about two years ago I started having lower GI troubles. Gas, bloating, the runs and worse. These happened often. I also started experiencing frequent dehydration and painful cramping in my back, legs, and stomach. At times simply twisting in place would start the cramps. I was able to ease them when they happened with large amounts of water in a short time, but it's not easy to drink 64+ oz of water while your back or stomach are cramping!
Anyway, I've also noticed over the years that my tastebuds are messed up. I can't taste things like mushrooms, vanilla, cheese, and other apparently random foods. I have no proof this is lisinopril, but after what I've been reading I suspect it may have been behind all of this.
Two days ago I woke up having trouble breathing. My lungs felt like they were literally on fire. When I coughed I spit out watery liquid. I thought it was going to be blood when it was happening. This had happened to me once before, but this time was much worse. After twenty minutes of suffering I realized I was also getting hives. I have another severe allergy that I won't go into detail about, so I am on high alert if I start getting hives like this. I woke my wife and she drove me to the ER.
ER Doc, a saint of a man, immediately pointed to the lisinopril. He was convinced right away it couldn't be my other allergy as I avoid that like the plague!
He prescribed me a new med, and so far so good. I really had no idea it could have these side effects. For me, the lowering of the BP actually did work though, but the side effects... sheesh, they were too much.

I've been on this blood pressure medicine for about two months. I had been having side effects but didn't know it. I thought I was just getting use to the meds. I world go to work and cine up and go to bed for the rest of the day. I did this everyday for three weeks.
I ate some fruit while at work, and my mouth swole up some. I thought I was having a reaction to the fruit. I took a benadryl and called it a day. It did go down.
Well yesterday, I had a faction so bad it landed me right here in this hospital bed. My top lip swole up 5 times the regular size. The right side of my face became distorted it was so lumpy. I came to the hospital they immediately knew what was wrong with me. Thank God my tongue and throat hasn't swollen up yet, or I would be on life support right now.
Every nurse that spoke to me said this reaction happens like 75/80% of Black People.
I'm convinced my doctor was trying to kill me.

Yesterday, I looked online for what to do about this and I just can't believe the pages and pages (thousands) of people who have terrible problems with this med. I even read it comes from some venomous snake in South America. YIKES!!!
I do not recommend anyone taking this med considering my daughter and all the other people who have had problems.

What he didn't tell me was that my 40 year old self would feel like I was dying after 4 days! I couldn't move, couldn't breathe, I had to crawl to my bathroom to urinate. My face and neck flushed so bad that I blacked out and by eyes felt like they would pop.
So, I didn't take it today and I was feeling better... Still weak and my body freaking hurts... Until dinner tonight. I had to sit to cook spaghetti sauce. I feel just like I did yesterday. And I can barely get enough breath to speak more than 2 words... It's like in in a constant bear hug.
This gets better, right?

However, my issues started a little over 30 days ago with high blood pressure (180/110) and some shortness of breath. My regular Dr. prescribed Lisinopril. I was taking 10 mg. in the morning and 10 mg. in the evening. After 30 days, my BP is now much better.
However, I have had SHORTNESS OF BREATH/difficulty breathing for the last 30 days. It just comes out nowhere, when I am eating or just sitting still. My Dr. thought it might be a result of something else like acid reflux - I have had other tests since then and it is not due to acid reflux.
In the last 5 days, I have developed a nagging cough - and this past weekend experienced a "tightening feeling" around the neck area. I also experienced a terrible breathing episode where it felt like my windpipe collapsed/closed for a brief - instant moment. I had to stand up and swallow to be able to breathe.
Luckily today, I had a consultation with a cardiologist - who took me off Lisinopril and gave me something else. I guess we will see if my cough and shortness of breath/difficulty breathing symptoms disappear in a 4-7 days.

Do NOT take this drug. There are many good alternatives - but physicians really LIKE this drug because it works well and is affordable. So they will resist you. Persevere ... else you risk a permanent allergy like mine.

I take taurine, magnesium malate, CoQ10, vitamin B and eat a lot of oats (not the processed stuff), and a lot of water. I watch my salt intake very carefully. At home, I use small amounts of Himalayan salt (not the processed stuff). A lot to be said for leading a balanced life with a good diet and exercise, and without a lot of stress.

Today both lips are swollen so big that I can't speak, eat or drink easily and they are painful to touch. I can't close my mouth so I continue to drool on myself.
I went to see my doctor and he concluded that I didn't have an allergy to food but that the swelling is caused by lisinopril.
He told me to immediately stop taking it.

This is an update to my post below regarding crippling effect from Lisinopril. My symptoms were so horrible and extreme that my doctor sent me for an ultrasound of my legs to see if I had blood clots. The test was negative. I told the doctor I refuse to take this medication or any other from its class. I simply refused. Within 24-hours of stopping Lisinopril, the pain in my knees began to subside. Within 48-hours it became easier to go from a sitting to a standing position. 5 days later, one of my legs feels closer to normal (but is still painful and weak) and the other leg is still slowing feeling better, but still painful. I don't know if or when I will recover from these side effects. I would like to know if others are having this experience? I'm angry about this, it has reduced my quality of life to that of someone twice my age.
To see if it was all in my head or not, I took a Lisinopril yesterday to see if it would have any effect, good or bad. Within 4 hours of taking a 20mg pill, I was unable to stand up from the couch. I had to get help pulling myself up. Once I was in a standing position, I could barely hobble around the house. Today I didn't take any Lisinopril and I'm able to stand up just fine without help.
There is something in this drug that attacks the muscles or cartilage around my knees. It's absolutely dreadful.
If I don't have a full recovery, I will be seeking legal counsel.

On Friday January 18 2014 I could have died. This why I am writing here. I was at work again mid morning in a meeting and my right eye started twitching uncontrollably. I went into the bathroom and saw my eyes swelling up right I front of me. Using my knowledge of what happened in September I went to a pharmacy and bought benedryl took the recommended dose but it was different this time my right eye swelled shut and my left eye was open a slit. I drove to the walk in clinic but I got swelling all around my throat and uvula and palate so badly I could barely talk. They dosed me with an eppi and called an ambulance who took me to the ER. I was admitted to ICU incase I got worse and needed to be put on a ventilator. I was given Pepcid steriods and more anti hisramine. They shoved a a scope through my my nose to see how far the swelling went down my throat . That was one of the most unpleasant things I had to endure. They said i was lucky to be alive the swelling stopped at the uvula and if my tongue swelled I would have never made it to the walk in.
Recanting the entire morning I did not eat or drink anything that I have not taken before. The ICU doctors mentioned this side effect of lisinopril and told me not take it again. They sent me home with 2 eppi pens and a prescription for pregnosone. I will follow up with an allergist in six weeks and my family doc next week.
Be careful with Lisinopril I had no side effects before these 2 incidents and I could have died. If this happens to you call 911 immediately and get help. don't think you can take care of it on your own I thought I was a tough guy I was a stupid guy that got lucky. I have a wife and 2 young kids that need me.
I Hate Pharma
on
I HATE being on Any kind of drugs and will even avoid taking pain killers as long as I can. I had no choice, though, when at the end of 2012 I started having a tingling/numbness start up out of nowhere in my lower left lip/mouth spreading up my face to my eye over a period of about 5 days. I finally went to E/R and they thought it might be a reaction to a hydrochlorothiazide (water pill) I had taken that was expired. My doctor felt differently, though, and said the numbness was more likely a symptom of having high blood pressure & prescribed lisinopril. Starting at 10mg/day, I found it made me too tired to get anything done so I asked if I could cut back to 5mg/day. He agreed as long as my BP stayed under 140/90. So far it has (as long as I really watch my salt intake). Fortunately, I hadn't noticed any severe or outstanding side effects (other than basic ticklish cough & the fatigue from the start), but I'm concerned now because I've noticed in the last couple months that even though my systolic readings have been within a fairly normal range, my diastolic readings seem to have gone up and remain on the high side even when the systolic is in the normal range.
I don't understand that.
Well, as I've been trying to find ways to get OFF this stuff if I can, I've used these tactics:
* Walking more often (usually 3X a week w/ the doggies)
* Reading food labels for salt content/cutting them out
* Avoiding cheese
* Avoiding caffeine
- cutting out chocolate
- sticking with herbal teas vs. non-herbal
* Drinking more water
All this has definitely helped - [the hardest for me is increasing the walking (should be daily), and giving up the cheese], but I continue the battle daily, and have discovered a few other things by Reading Reading Reading that I'd like to share with you that might help;
* TAURINE:
I came across an article in Woman's World Magazine (Nov. 11, 2013 issue - page 14) that suggested taking 6000mg of the amino acid Taurine daily.
Quote from the article:
It "can send your blood pressure down nine points in two weeks - outperforming even powerful ACE inhibitors - reveals research done at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. Taurine prods your adrenal glands to produce norepinephrine, a hormone that helps your arteries stay relaxed, even during high-stress times. The most economical way to buy taurine is in powder form; mixing 1 1/2 tsp. into water or tea daily will give you the optimal dose. (Important: Taurine is considered a safe and well-tolerated supplement, but, as always, check with our doctor before starting a new supplement.)"
* OATMEAL
My Mom eats oatmeal religiously every morning. She's 84 and "her heart is in remarkably good condition, especially for an 84-yr-old", says her heart doctor. I decided to start having it too and immediately noticed a significant drop in my BP readings. They went from (on avg) 135/85 to 138/89 to 127/76! I took my reading 3X in a row to make sure my cuff was on correctly and each time they came out in the 120's over 70s range!
I believe God provides the answers/treatments to our diseases in the natural foods & herbs (NATURAL being the KEY WORD here) He's placed on this planet ~
The information is just buried under a "hill of swill", if you will, from Pharma & FDA pushing their drugs down our throats. Drugs may provide a solution in a quick fix, but should only be temporary, not long-term. Let's all keep up the search & continue sharing our findings with others!
God Bless!

One morning I woke up with my left eyelid swollen, and both of my hands swollen so bad I could not go to work. I ached so bad! I had my daughter-in-law drive me to my doctors office because my hands were too swollen and in pain. My doctor looked at me and said she had no idea what the problem was. She told me to put ice on my hands.
I was angry and saw a different doctor a few days later. He immediately took me off the Lisinopril, and with in a couple of days, I saw a tremendous difference! I still have trouble will over all pain, especially in my joints. My (new) doctor has run every test in the books and can not discover the cause of my pain.
Recently, I have begun to wonder if it could be permanent damage, caused by Lisinopril. If anyone else has had this problem, and can help me, I would be more grateful than you could ever imagine.
