Despite Mirena Link to Pseudotumor Cerebri, No Warnings

. By
New York, NYMore than 18 months ago, lawyers filed a number of lawsuits alleging Mirena’s association with the onset of Pseudotumor Cerebri. And 20 years ago in Mirena clinical trials, researchers warned of a neurological risk. But Bayer has yet to include these side effects on its warning label.

Mirena Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) lawsuits claim that Bayer failed to adequately warn about the link between the hormone levonorgestrel - which is present in Mirena and certain birth control pills - and PTC, or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), meaning “high pressure inside the skull for unknown reasons.” The lawsuits allege that levonorgestrel can elevate levels of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, which increases pressure in the brain, similar to a tumor.

How could Bayer not know about Mirena and PTC? Besides its own clinical trial results, where 7.7 percent of women reported headaches and migraine, birth controls using levonorgestrel such as Norplant and Jadelle have long contained PTC and IIH warnings in their labeling. Researchers in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1995 reported in a letter to the editor the link between levonorgestrel and intracranial hypertension.

(Progestin is a synthetic hormone, which can be used alone (as in the “mini pill”) or combined with estrogen, another hormone. Levonorgestrel is a second-generation progestin and is the most widely prescribed contraceptive progestin worldwide. Fourth-generation birth control pills, such as Yasmin and Yaz, contain the progestin drospirenone.)

As of August 2014, only nine Mirena PTC/IIH lawsuits have been filed, but this could be the tip of the iceberg. For instance, Mirena complaints associated with IUD migration and organ perforation started with a few complaints - as do most drug and medical device complaints. Now that women are aware of these Mirena side effects, more than 3,000 lawsuits have been filed, many of which are grouped into multidistrict litigation (MDL).

Given only nine of these suits so far, the The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation rejected the plaintiffs’ centralization bid suing Bayer over the neurological conditions allegedly caused by its Mirena. The panel said that there are too few suits and parties involved to warrant a consolidation. This decision, however, does not stop anyone from filing an individual claim against Bayer. The Mirena manufacturer and drug giant should have known that levonorgestrel can lead to serious neurological risks before it sought FDA approval. In fact, it should never have gotten that far.

I had the mirena iud sometime in 2013. I didn't have any problem about it at first except having constant back and hip which i never linked to the device. 'Twas august of 2015 when symptoms are gradually appearing, it started with debilitating headache day and night that no almount of pain killers would work, tinitus, blurry vision, anxiety, depression, neck pain, tingling sensation on the left side of my body, pins and needles, palpitations, developed floters in my right eye, felt like my jaw was dropping, weight gain and probably all the symptoms associated with any disease. I thought i was dying at the moment but my doctors couldn't find anything with my blood tests, xray, ultasound. They performed a lot of test except MRI because i got frustrated with my doctor and I know he thought I'm just crazy but i know there is something wrong. My friend told me maybe it's my hormones so that night i think of my iud coz it's the only thing i have that could affect my hormones so i googled 'mirena' and wow, to my horror the amount of complaints about this device is huge. The same symptoms as young as 20's and up. The next morning I walked in to my OB and begged them to remove it that i'm gonna die if they don't 'coz I can barely walk that day because of so much pain but the sad thing is they didn't even give me 5mins of their time for waiting there for 6hours. I tried another providers and luckily I found one, the moment they took it out i felt 50% less pain with my headache, tingling is gone, but most of the symptoms stayed and only God knows if i'd be able to completely heal. Now, 7months post removal still having headaches, weird ear pain, blurry visions, still have floaters, fatigue, anxiety and most of the symptoms i had before they removed it. I have two kids and a husband to take care of but how can I be able ti give them the best of care with this condition?

I got the Mirena IUD in December of 2007 . September 2008 I was diagnosed with IIH. When it began for the first few days my vision would get blurred for a few mins at a time, I thought it was fatigued as I worked and continued my college education at night. Then one night while driving on the highway coming from school my vision went totally double . I had to drive home with one eye closed just to see. I was scared out of my mind. Needless to say I went to the emergency room later on that night, they the ER doctor thought is was vertigo and sent me home with meds. The meds made me
lethargic. I then requested an urgent visit with my primary care doctor, whom brushed it off as if having double vision was normal, she told me that I needed some rest and tried to send me home. I requested a medical note stating that I could not work until they figured out what was wrong with me. Now im stressed out with an unknown medical condition.
