Kansas City, MOThe driver killed in a Missouri car crash that backed up northbound traffic on Highway 71 in south Kansas City last week has been identified as 28-year-old Jermaine T. Banks of Kansas City.
The wreck occurred shortly before 3 am on April 28 when Banks lost control of his Pontiac Trans Am while speeding along the highway. He crossed three lanes of traffic before crashing into a guardrail on the east side of the road. Emmanuel J. Sanders, a passenger in the car, was ejected from the vehicle in the crash.
The Trans Am rolled another 250 feet before coming to a stop near the middle of the highway, at which point the vehicle was struck in the rear by a Mazda 626. Banks was ejected from the totaled car and became trapped under the Mazda. According to KCTV5.com he died on the scene.
Sanders was taken to a nearby hospital with serious leg injuries, while the driver of the Mazda sustained only a minor hand injury.
Police on the scene cleared the Mazda driver of driving under the influence, and have announced plans to test Banks' sobriety at the time of the accident.
