Hemet, CAThe family of a California boy who suffered burn pit exposure while flying a kite on a beach wants to know if the state and local area properly maintain such fire rings on their beaches, reports the Orange County Register.
According to the news provider, family members claim that 6-year-old Seth Richardson of Hemet was flying a kite on April 17 at Huntington City Beach when he fell into a fire pit that had a smoldering fire lit.
As a result, the boy allegedly suffered second- and third-degree burns on his right arm and chest and is currently undergoing treatment at the surgical intensive-care unit at a hospital in Orange, the news source said.
"He was burned when he tried to push himself out of the pit and it was still burning," said Seth's father, Jason Richardson.
The news source reports that the incident is just the latest in a string of similar occurrences at Orange County beaches over the past few years. Some such cases have led to families filing burn pit lawsuits as a result, according to the news provider.
Huntington City Beach is known by many as "Surf City."
