Dollar Tree Faces Overtime Pay Lawsuit

. By Charles Benson

Several employees at Dollar Tree retailers in southern Florida have sued the company for failure to comply with the minimum wage and overtime pay rules of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, lawyers for the plaintiffs claimed that the employees were frequently asked to make runs to the bank on company business after hours and were required to work through their lunch hour without appropriate compensation.

The Dollar Tree's alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act include pay below the state's minimum wage, which is $7.25 per hour, and docking pay for employees required to work through lunch.

The company has been subjected to lawsuits for wage violations before, reports the news source. "[Dollar Tree Inc.] should have implemented appropriate pay practices company-wide," said the attorney for the plaintiffs.

"We don't comment on pending litigation," said Dollar Tree Inc. spokesman Timothy Reid, when asked about the new lawsuit.

Last year, Florida saw far more suits over alleged violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act than did any other state, with more than 2,000 new suits filed in federal court, reports the Sentinel.
