San Francisco, CAThe San Francisco Police Department is undergoing an internal investigation of several officers allegedly in violation of California overtime laws, which could lead to future criminal charges.
According to The San Francisco Chronicle, the department's record management unit and an unaffiliated lieutenant are the focus of the allegations, the exact nature of which have yet to be revealed. It is rumored that the fraud involves falsifying of time sheets, mismanagement of duties and falsely reported off-duty work.
"We are currently investigating a report of mismanagement of overtime in the police department, however, since it is an active and open investigation, we cannot comment further at this time," Kevin Cashman, assistant chief of the SFPD tells the Chronicle.
The probe has prompted SFPD Chief George Gascon to create a Professional Standards Unit to oversee the proceedings as well as to randomly monitor overtime cards for employees throughout the department.
The Chronicle claims that overtime pay has recently driven the department's budget up by more than $1 million each month.
