Los Angeles, CAA California appeals court recently ruled in favor of employees who were denied lunch breaks in overtime pay lawsuits filed by workers for United Parcel Service, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The Second District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles ruled that employers in the state who do not provide workers with 30-minute meal breaks and rest periods of 10 minutes must pay them compensation in the form of two hours of wages, according to the news source.
An attorney for the employees who filed the overtime pay suit told the news source that their individual claims total at least $200,000 and that there are other similar lawsuits against other employers on the docket.
UPS reportedly claims that the employees who filed the lawsuits are managers who are not required to be given overtime or break periods. According to the news source, that issue has not yet been resolved by the California Supreme Court.
According to its Web site, UPS was founded in 1907 and is now the largest package delivery company in the world.
