Putney, VTA bus accident on Interstate 91 has injured 37 people, six critically, MSNBC.com is reporting. The bus was carrying students from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to Quebec, Canada for a skiing holiday. It was one of three buses transporting students on the ski trip.
Two helicopters and around 12 ambulances arrived at the scene, some ambulances having come from as far away as Keen and Winchester, NH. One ambulance reportedly arrived from Albany. Some passengers were taken to hospitals in Brattleboro and Springfield VT, while others were treated at the scene.
The bus reportedly flipped on the road and slid down an embankment near Putney. Although the cause of the crash is not yet known, one possible theory is that the driver had a heart attack. Weather doesn't appear to be a factor as the Weather Channel reported local conditions at the time of the accident as 37 degrees and cloudy, with 5-10 mph winds.
