American Airlines Flight 309 Emergency Landing--Another Narrow Escape

Another American Airlines flight made an emergency landing this morning-- this time on land at Kennedy Airport in New York??"and narrowly avoiding disaster. American Flight 309 departed LaGaurdia airport at 8:15 am this morning. Minutes after take-off there was a loud bang and the right engine failed.

The crew reportedly radioed air traffic control that they were having engine trouble, and were redirected to land at Kennedy airport just 12 miles away. Flight 309 touched down at 8:36 am, 21 minutes after take-off.

While all 88 passengers and 5 crew are safe, with no injuries reported, a house in the Queens borough of New York, which the plane was flying over, may have suffered damages. Reportedly investigators found four dozen pieces of metal in the roof of the house. So far there is no word on the residents' condition or whereabouts. People in the neighborhood reported hearing a loud bang as the plane passed overhead.

As for the plane, a McDonnell Douglas 80, investigators found pieces of metal embedded in the fuselage. The cause of the engine failure remains under investigation.
