Hartford, CTBoehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (Boehringer) was the first to lob a new anti-coagulant into a marketplace crying for an easier way to manage or reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. However dabigatran (Pradaxa), according to various Pradaxa lawsuits, did not turn out to be the savior it was touted to become, with plaintiffs alleging that Boehringer failed to adequately disclose the lack of a reversing agent.
Such irreversibility, say Pradaxa side effects plaintiffs, is alleged to have permanently disabling, life-threatening and fatal consequences.
One of two recent Pradaxa lawsuits was filed by Adelaide Vari, the spouse of the late Americo Vari. The plaintiff holds that her late husband suffered an uncontrollable brain hemorrhage alleged to have been caused by Pradaxa.
Given that dabigatran Pradaxa was brought to market without any effective means to reverse the anticoagulation effects of the drug – as is alleged – there was little doctors could do once the brain hemorrhage suffered by Americo Vari had begun.
Coumadin (warfarin), the 50-year-old drug Pradaxa was meant to replace, can be reversed with the application of Vitamin K. The anticoagulant properties of Pradaxa cannot be reversed in kind, putting patients at risk.
As the foregoing alleges, there have been Pradaxa deaths associated with the use of Pradaxa. Other injuries reported and alleged include Pradaxa Heart attack and Pradaxa bleeding.
The latter is alleged in another recent Pradaxa lawsuit filed by co-plaintiffs Linda and Arnold R. Castillo. Arnold Castillo, while prescribed Pradaxa to help manage stroke risk and systemic embolism associated with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, suffered an uncontrollable Pradaxa bleeding event.
As a result Arnold Castillo – who survived – suffered various injuries that has resulted in a loss of consortium claim on the part of his wife, Linda.
The Pradaxa lawsuit is Arnold R. Castillo and Linda Castillo v. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Boehringer Ingelheim International GMBH, Case No. HHD-cv-16-6070343-S in Connecticut Superior Court, in the City of Hartford.
The Vari lawsuit is Adelaide Vari, representing the estate of Americo Vari, v. Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Boehringer Ingelheim International GMBH, Case No. HHD-cv-16-6070317-S, filed August 5 of this year in Connecticut Superior Court, in the City of Hartford.
