St. Petersburg, FLA Tampa woman was recently hospitalized after contracting Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), a severe form of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS), which caused severe pains from the inside of her skin.
Yasmin Hernandez was admitted to a local hospital with a fever of 109 degrees caused by an allergic reaction to prescription bipolar medication. Upon admission, doctors were able to diagnose the condition as TEN.
SJS and TEN are life-threatening skin diseases provoked by severe allergic reactions to medication. The reaction causes large areas of the skin to become detached and lesions to develop in the mucous membranes. These lesions often become infected, leading to severe scarring, debilitating injuries and potentially death.
Hernandez has developed serious blistering that burned large sections of her skin off from the inside. She is currently bandaged from head to toe and breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.
Her husband tells the local news that his wife has a 30 percent chance of surviving the ordeal.
"I don't wish this upon anybody. I want them to know exactly what's going on," he tells Fox News. "There's no words to explain to the kids how their mom is doing. All they know right now is that she's sick."
