Lawsuits Allege WEN Linked to Hair Loss

. By
Los Angeles, CALawsuits have been filed against Guthy-Renker, manufacturer of the WEN hair care product line, alleging the product line caused consumers to lose their hair. Hundreds of WEN hair loss lawsuits have reportedly been filed, with Guthy-Renker facing claims it failed to warn consumers about the risks of using WEN even after consumers complained about hair loss.

In 2015, The Daily Beast (12/10/15) reported that 200 women in 40 states had filed suits against WEN, claiming they suffered hair loss, scalp damage and other problems after using WEN. WEN is sold as being sulfate-free, but plaintiffs allege they developed side effects of using WEN within weeks of starting the hair care products. Amy Friedman, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuits, claims it took three weeks and substantial vitamin intake to stop her hair loss.

“The hair loss is not de minimus - consumers who suffer hair loss often lose one quarter to one third of their hair, or more,” Friedman's lawsuit alleges. “As a result, beyond the cost of the Products, consumers are forced to undertake a variety of costly efforts to regain their hair and mask the ill effects of the Products.”

Guthy-Renker has denied its WEN products are defective or cause hair loss. Although WEN is marketed as being sulfate-free, it still contains many ingredients commonly found in other hair care products. Hair loss can also be attributed to other factors, including genetics and use of styling tools such as flat irons, meaning plaintiffs will have to work hard to prove WEN is the cause of the hair loss.

But the plaintiffs argue Guthy-Renker knew or should have known about the risks associated with WEN and further allege the company concealed and/or erased comments concerning hair loss from WEN’s Facebook page.

In response to initial lawsuits being filed, Guthy-Renker filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuits on the grounds that clients who purchased WEN hair care products online agreed to binding arbitration. In issuing his ruling on the motion to dismiss the WEN lawsuits, Judge Otis D. Wright granted part of the motion to dismiss but denied another part, stating that not all customers who purchased WEN online had proper inquiry notice of the arbitration terms.

The Friedman lawsuit is Friedman et al. v. Guthy-Renker, case number 2:14-cv-06009, in US District Court, Central District of California.

I also bought Sweet Almond Mint a few years back and my hair also started to fall. I was on their Wen club and I still have 3-4 bottles left. I stopped using after I noticed the difference in my hair loss began to increase more and more as I continued to use this product. Because I had finished the trial; I was unable to return the bottles I still have left and get a refund. I cancelled my subscription soon there after.

My name is Angela Stobart ... I ordered the "Sweet Almond Mint" late in December of 2014 and started using it shortly after it arrived.

I only used the product for a few weeks and at first my hair did seem to look and feel nice, then the results changed and it began to feel kind of heavy and seemed to have a weird coating on it. I also noticed that my scalp was quite itchy and there were some small painful sores around the back of my hairline, the nape of my neck and above and behind my ears, mostly on the left side of my head. Shortly afterwards I also started losing massive amounts of hair at an alarming rate.

I switched back to my regular shampoo and conditioners, but the hair loss, although slowed, has continued for nearly a year and a half now. I've seen doctors, had a variety of tests done and I spent months and months switching back and forth between shampoo brands, trying to get it back to a healthy state again and even tried WEN again a few months back, in an effort to restore my hair to its former state.

I couldn't figure out what the problem was until I ran across the information with regards to WEN and the many reports of hair loss. At his point in time, I've now lost over half of my hair volume, including a large chunk of hair on the left side of my head above the ear, that came out all at once in my hair brush one day.

All my life I have had thick, full, luscious, waist-length hair and now, thanks to this product I don't. I am devastated by what this product has done to me.

Between 2014-2015 I had 5 deliveries of "WEN" from QVC which I received automatically every few months. I had been complaining about severe hair loss to my hair dresser and my husband and had never heard or read anything about any issues others were having with using WEN. I'm shocked that a product that was supposed to be so gentle on hair would possibly have been the cause of my hair loss.

I am just finding out about this hair loss related Wen issue now. I have email records showing that I was consulting a friend who went through hair loss and how to reverse it because I was going through it. I had purchased the Wen product from Qvc on a few occasions as well as their info mercial thinking that the product would help my hair. I also started by hair skin and nail vitamins to help the thinning of my hair (again not knowing anything about the Wen alligations).. It makes sense that using the Wen product is linked to the thinning and hair loss I experienced.

My name is Sheila Kitchens I used Wen Hair products in 2014 and 2015 although it made my hair very manageable and soft. I noticed immediately that I was losing lots of my hair each time I combed or brushed it. At one point I thought I had cancer... So after using it for about 6 months to a year I decided to stop using the product because I was convinced that it was causing my hair to come out extensively.

I have been using Wen products for years and thought my hair loss was due to age.
