Critics Question Liptruzet

. By Heidi Turner

Even though Liptruzet has only just been introduced on the market, at least one critic is questioning why the drug received approval. Liptruzet is a combination of Lipitor and Zetia, but Steven Nissen, of the Cleveland Clinic, says that because Zetia has not been proven to prevent heart attacks and strokes, approving it in combination with another drug does not make sense.

According to Forbes (5/3/13), Zetia has been shown to lower low-density lipoproteins but has not been proven in studies to prevent heart attacks or strokes. Nissen argues that doctors could prescribe Lipitor and Zetia separately, rather than having the FDA approve a combination drug. Merck has said it is confident in its drug.
