Patient Scheduled for Fourth Zimmer NexGen Knee Surgery

. By
Waynesville, NC"From day one, I've had nothing but trouble with this Zimmer NexGen knee replacement," says Minnie, who is scheduled for a fourth surgery next week.

"My initial surgery back in September 2009 seemed to be successful and I followed up with physical therapy, but as soon as I went back to work, I had constant pain and my knee was always swollen," Minnie explains. "I could feel the bone where the metal sits every time I walked upstairs—sideways."

The Zimmer Web site promotes its NexGen knee by stating that "the simple problems of normal flexion, that provide the ability to walk, sit or climb stairs with minimal difficulty…and those activities that require bending deeply at the knee can be addressed." Minnie's ability to climb stairs has worsened since she had the knee replacement. And because she was unable to perform her job as department manager (she works in retail), she was demoted to cashier.

"I finally went back to my orthopedic surgeon this past January and had x-rays taken" she says. "He saw a lot of fluid on my knee and said it was because my NexGen knee wasn't fitting to the bone like it should and I had to get a revision surgery.

"The first surgery was the NexGen knee implant. The second surgery was because the knee cap was not staying in place, so my surgeon reopened my knee and replaced something so my kneecap wouldn't move. In March of this year, he replaced the top part of the knee implant because it was loose. My surgeon told me (the next morning after the third surgery) that he pulled the knee implant to see how loose it was and it popped right out.

"Now I am scheduled for my fourth surgery on the same knee next week and had my pre-op yesterday. This fourth time, the bottom part of the metal knee is being replaced because it was shifting after I fell while I was in the hospital. I was in the bathroom, and when I stood up, my knee collapsed and I went down…

"I haven't talked to my surgeon about whether or not this NexGen knee is defective. Every time I see him I'm in and out of his office because he is so busy, but this time I am going to ask him why I've had so many surgeries and if this is indeed a defective knee.

"My husband said you need to get a lawyer, because this is ridiculous. I saw an ad on TV about the NexGen knee replacement while sitting in my doctor's office—isn't that ironic! I know it hasn't been recalled—yet—but I heard that a lawsuit can be filed regardless."

Minnie is right; she doesn't have to wait for the Zimmer NexGen knee to be recalled, even though the momentum is growing for a NexGen CR-Flex recall. In September 2010, Zimmer recalled 350 components of its NexGen LPS-Flex knee replacement. Dr. Richard Berger, a former Zimmer consultant, described the knee replacement as having "nonconforming and inconsistent geometry."

Furthermore, a number of knee surgeons presented data at a recent conference of The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. They said the rate of failure for some Zimmer NexGen knee replacement systems are "unacceptably high," and many knee replacement patients have experienced loosening with the Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral implant and needing revision surgery within a few years of their initial surgery. Minnie is just one of those patients.

I had a medial bone to bone my orthopedic doctor said I needed a total need knee replacement. I am 51 years old and was an athlete. First surgery was with Zimmerman and size 8 bands. PT came to my house and within two weeks my knee was loose and popping from side to side. It would give way and I would fall. That was July 30 , 2013 then a revision was done in November 12 , 2013. I was not allowed physical therapy , told I had loose joints, I struggled, fell , leg would give way and all were loose. They said I had drop foot and needed another revision, scheduled for Dec 2013. Pre- ops not completed so I had to wait till January 2014 and they put (Truck) or quad) --Hinge joint It has been 11 months now and I still have very little bend. In July 2012 I fell and fractured 4 ribs and my left collarbone. Also collapsed my left lung from the fall. Is there no one out there who can help me? They will not low any Physical Therapy, and the first knee gave out before I was allowed to schedule. No CPM machines, last two surgeries---- Is there any one out there can help me. I now have metal that goes @ 6 inches up through my thigh and @ 4 inches down my calf. It is a hinge joint. My first two replacements were Zimmerman's, I do not know what this is. but have no range of movement and still fall a lot. Twice to hospital in October. Is there anyone that can help me. I do not want to live my life like this. It is also causing my hip toing to shift and lower lumbar spine to shift right to left causing nerve pain and damage. I will travel anywhere if I can be helped but my keg has atrophied and I am unable to stand or walk for any periods of time without pain in knee and swelling and hip discomfort also including lower back. please help me get my life back.

I am so disgusted to see what you have gone through. I was a Smith and Nephew patient who without knowledge received a CEMENTLESS knee that was not even FDA APPROVED to be used on patients. It had been approved to be cemented in only. Also the specified patient was to be an Older and one who was getting a revision.
Well, I was not even a fit for that profile. I was 46 years old, active and it was my original first replacement.
Mine failed 2 times causing me to have 3 total knee replacements and mine did the same as yours. It just popped right off. This is happening because as I am finding the bone is growing an ingrowth keeping the cement from even adhering to the bone. I think the only reason the knee this time remains is because of the rod my surgeon put up my femur.
LET ME WARN YOU! 1st, I had attorneys lie to me not telling me this information and stealing from me. They manipulated my case hiding this fraud so the Surgeon would not be found for this crime.
Also, know that any Surgeon too busy to see his patient having to have more than 1 knee replacement on a single leg? That is being a COWARD...... Bottom line, he is a down right coward hiding some information from you that he is guilty about. You are the most important patient in his practice that could destroy his reputation for one reason. I assure you he is more than likely a Surgeon who is part of being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars or more of Kickback money illegally by the Device Company.
Be very careful who you choose to represent you. Know every paper they turn in on your behalf. Your Reputation is in their hands so be very careful. Then You decide how your money in a settlement is distributed, not the attorney. You want to see every receipt!

Best Wishes
