Consolidated Edison
Estate of Lane v. Consolidated Edison Company of New York
Nearly a year after a woman was electrocuted while walking her dogs on a wet East village street; Consolidated Edison has agreed to pay her family more than $6.25 million and set up a $1 million scholarship fund in her name. The scholarship fund will be at Columbia University, where she was a doctoral student.
The settlement finally announced after months of negotiation between Con Edison and the family of the women. Jodie S. Lane died the night of Jan. 16 after stepping on an electrified metal plate. Ms. Lane's death set off some criticism towards the utility that led to aggressive new safety rules and citywide inspections of electrical equipment and stray voltage.
Under the settlement terms Con Edison must pay five annual installments of $200,000. According to papers that were filed in Surrogate's Court in Manhattan, $5.27 million of the settlement is for wrongful death and $975,000 is for Ms. Lane's pain and suffering. Under the terms of the settlement the company will pay about $7.25 million, including the scholarship.
