Palo Alto Police
A settlement of $250,000 has been reached by city of Palo Alto in a lawsuit filed by a man who claimed that he was bullied and beaten by two Palo Alto police officers last year. The suit claimed that race was a factor in the attack.
Hopkins said that he was sitting in his parked car on Oxford Avenue near El Camino Real when a police officer, drove up and asked for some identification. Hopkins refused and Officer Lee ultimately identified him through a radio check of his license plate. At that moment another police officer came on the spot and in consultation with Lee, ordered Hopkins out of his car. Again, Hopkins refused but finally stood up. The two officers then assaulted him with their batons and pepper spray. After the incident, Hopkins had to undergo surgery and suffered from mental depression.
