Desiree Case was a 16 year old prostitute that was murdered in 2002. Madison County correction officer, Joseph Smith, who once held a relationship with the teen, was convicted of her second degree murder. Later evidence showed Smith was not guilty and he sued the city and county for $6 million. Smith received $75,000 from the city and $45,000 from the county for his wrongful conviction.
