Settlement: Research In Motion
A settlement has been reached between NTP and Research In Motion over a patent-infringement lawsuit. Research In Motion is to pay $450 million over unauthorized use of NTP technologies. The suit was brought to court in Virginia in 2001 after NTP complained that Research In Motion was using NTP patents in its own products. The settlement includes payment for past infringements and also pays for use of the technologies in the future. Had the settlement not been reached, Research In Motion, known mostly for its Blackberry handheld, may have had to pay around $1 billion. As well as the $450 million for the settlement, the company also spent almost $25 million fighting the lawsuit. After the announcement of the settlement, Research In Motion stock jumped 19 percent.
