Shell Oil Company

Two of the company's subsidiaries, Shell Western E&P Inc. and Shell Land & Energy Company, have settled with the state of New Mexico over unpaid royalties. As part of a major internal audit, state officials have found many oil and natural gas companies owe New Mexico a lot of money in unpaid land use royalties, in particular from carbon dioxide extraction around an area called the Bravo Dome. Shell has been required to pay $1.25 million in the settlement, which also charged BP America Production Company and Amerada Hess Company with unpaid royalty fees as well. Carbon dioxide is used by companies in harvesting oil and gas. Since 1993, 22 companies operating in New Mexico have settled royalty claims with the state, earning money which is generally used for public services like schools and hospitals.
