Cecil and Chicago Title Insurance Co.

In 2003, the federal Department of Veteran Affairs purchased a 292 acre cemetery site in Cecil Township for $2.3 million. The county claimed $2,300 in back taxes was owed on the parcel so they sold the land at auction in 2004 for $40,000 to Florida based Jambeth Investments. The federal government then sued, claiming the property could not be sold without its consent and that the land became tax exempt after the purchase from the federal government. Under the terms of the settlement, Cecil County will refund $40,000 to Jambeth. The government's title agent, Chicago Title Insurance Co., will pay Jambeth an additional $50,000, and pay the county the $2,300 in back real estate taxes. (Jun-23-05) [PITTSBURGH LIVE]
