Joseph Heard is deaf, mute and mentally impaired. He was charged with trespassing in 1998, but a DC Superior Court judge let him off by declaring him mentally unfit to stand trial. A year later he was mistakenly put behind bars for two years. A U.S. District Judge has awarded Heard a $1.1 million settlement plus legal fees for his wrongful imprisonment. (Aug-05-05) [COURT TV]
