Motiva Enterprises LLC

After two-years of negotiations, Motiva agrees to $12 million settlement over explosion and fire at a Delaware oil refinery in July, 2001. The explosion killed one employee and injured eight others and released sulfuric acid into the Delaware River. After investigations by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice, Motiva was charged with violating the Clean Water Act and several other violations for negligence to safety and maintenance. In addition to the $12 million civil penalty, Motiva will pay more than $4 million for environmental projects and Premcor Inc., who acquired the Delaware facility, will pay another $7.5 million in equipment and process upgrades; total settlement equals $23 million.
