El Morro Mobile Home Residents

In 1979, the state of California purchased El Morro and Crystal Cove for $32.6 million. At that time residents signed a 20 year lease and in 1999 a five year lease extension was granted. In January 2005, the state decided to turn part of Crystal Cove State Park into a campground. The 400 residents living in 247 mobile homes in El Morro did not leave when their lease ended. Residents have been ordered to leave by March and must pay $650,000 in legal fees. The state will remove any remaining trailers in March and plan to create a campground at the site.
