LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
City of Chicago
On Jan. 30, 2001, Roberta Briefman was working in a construction site trench when a thousand pound block of concrete fell onto her back. Briefman suffered severe spinal cord injury that left one of her legs completely paralyzed and the other partially paralyzed. She filed a lawsuit against the city for failing to follow and enforce their own polices and procedures out of neglect and indifference. Briefman's former employer, Reliable Equipment, agreed to pay her a $2 million settlement if she agreed to drop efforts to recover workers compensation payments. The city's Finance Committee calls for the city to pay Briefman a $3 million settlement, but drop its third party claim against Reliable. (Dec-13-05)
