Mount Sinai Fire District

At the age of 23, Bradford Amato was a probationary firefighter for the local fire district. In July 2002, several volunteers and firefighters were participating in a department parade. After the celebrations, Amato was intoxicated and decided to lean into the passenger side window of Assistant Chief Frederick Hess's SUV. Hess tried to get Amato off his truck by raising and lowering the electric windows. Amato fell from the window and suffered blunt force head trauma. Amato's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hess for allegedly violating department regulations and emergency protocols. Hess was not condemned for his actions, but the Mount Sinai Fire District agreed to award the family a $150,000 settlement for this terrible tragedy. (Dec-27-05) [NEWSDAY]
