Austrian Government

A Jewish woman and her family fled Vienna in 1939 as Nazis looted their home and stole several pieces of artwork. For the past seven years, Maria Altmann has fought the Austrian government regarding five multimillion dollar paintings by Gustav Klimt. A U.S. court found that Austria is legally obligated to return the artworks, which have been held by the Austrian National Gallery for more than 50 years. Altmann now lives in Los Angeles and her paintings will be returned; their estimated value is $150 million. (Jan-17-06) [LOS ANGELES TIMES]
