The capacitor factory released more than 400,000 pounds of PCBs into a tributary of Twelve Mile River between 1955 and 1977. The U.S. Department of Justice filed charges against the international corporation regarding toxic industrial pollution at Lake Hartwell. $65 million has already been spent cleaning up the former Sangamo-Weston plant site, six dump sites and several waterways. Schlumberger has agreed to pay $11.8 million to improve the fishery in Lake Hartwell and the natural habitat in the Twelve Mile Creek corridor and spend an additional $10 million to remove two dams on Twelve Mile Creek.
