LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Uniwest, J.T. Riley Inc. and Strober Haddonfield Group
In January 2001, Robert Bruce and Thomas Stinson were both 35-year-old members of the Elevator Constructors Local 5. While working on the Center City building in Philadelphia, the scaffolding gave way and the two men fell 30 feet to the shaft pit below. Stinson died the day after the accident and Bruce suffered injuries to his head, shoulder and back. Bruce and Stinson's family members filed a lawsuit against Uniwest, the general contractor for the construction project, the owner of the building, and J.T. Riley Inc. and Strober Haddonfield Group, two companies involved in the purchase of the lumber used to make the scaffolding. Uniwest agreed to settle with the plaintiffs for $9.5 million. J.T. Riley Inc. and Strober Haddonfield Group settled for $3 million and the undisclosed retirement community that owns the Center City building settled for $2 million. (Feb-17-06)
