Monsanto Co.
The University of California filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the biotechnology company regarding Bovine Somatotropin hormone that makes cows produce more milk. The university claimed three of its San Francisco researchers first isolated the DNA used to produce the hormone and that Monsanto knew about the research as early as 1985, but sold the product anyway. Monsanto agreed to pay the school $100 million in royalties and will pay 15 cents a dose, or at least $5 million annually, to license the patented technology. (Feb-27-06)
