PPL Corp.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection filed charges against the power producer for allegedly violating thermal water pollution policies. The coal fired plant draws 795 million gallons of water from the Susquehanna River for cooling purposes. When the water is discharged back into the river, it is warmer than it was when it was removed. The temperature increase has adversely impacted aquatic life along the river. Under an agreement with the state of Pennsylvania, PPL has agreed to spend $125 million to cool discharge water from its electric generation station. PPL will also pay a $183,386 civil penalty.
