AK Steel Corp.
The Sierra Club and Natural Resources Defense Council along with federal and Ohio environmental agencies filed charges against the maker of flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products for allegedly violating various environmental regulations. The United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, Western Division has approved a settlement that requires AK Steel to initiate a long term clean-up effort to remove PCB contamination in certain portions of Dicks Creek and Monroe Ditch. The clean-up effort is expected to cost more than $10 million. AK Steel has also agreed to pay a civil penalty of $460,000 and $750,000 for a supplemental environmental project. (Apr-03-06)
