Melrose Place Apartments
Former tenants, including 36 children and 26 adults, will receive over $3 million in compensation after suing the owners of Melrose Place apartments, a dilapidated, vermin-infested apartment complex that was often cited by country officials for health and safety violations. Many tenants also complained about fires, cockroaches, mold and broken windows.
Amounts received by the children range from $25,000 to $150,000 and will be held in trust until they reach the age of 18. Settlements in the adult cases ranged from $50,000 to $265,000 to a woman who was allegedly verbally abused by one of the owners. The building is now under new management and has received more than $200,000 in renovations. (Mar-29-06) [MERCURY NEWS]
