San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco's federal court awarded Tsungai Tungwarara a $45,000 settlement of her lawsuit that alleged abuse and misconduct by airport immigration officials.
At the age of 18, Tungwarara arrived in San Francisco from her native country of Zimbabwe to visit her mother. However, suspecting she had intentions of remaining in the U.S. illegally, immigration officials strip searched and detained her before ordering her to go back to Zimbabwe. It was also alleged that an inspector made a racist comment to the effect of "we won't allow these people here - not after September 11. Go back to the jungle." (Apr-20-06) [INDEPENDENT ONLINE]
